What Are The Different Types Of Boxing Punches?

The most fundamental skill that a boxer should learn is punching. Boxing punches may come in many different forms and combinations. It may also vary from boxer to boxer.  However, despite the many diverse variations, there are only four basic punches that a boxer should first learn.  Mastering these four basic punches will lead the boxer to many other punching techniques.





How and When to Use the Four Boxing Punches

  1. Jab

It is a forward punch that is the most-often punch used especially since it starts countless of combinations. This is best used for distant opponents.  It allows you to move a step closer to your opponent while snapping a punch either to the face or to the chin.

  1. Straight

This is often considered a knock out punch because it is potentially strong in nature.  Twist your body towards the opponent and blow a straight punch to the face or to the head using your dominant hand. Your forward foot must be of good balance because twisting your body forward gives you the chance to prepare for a stronger blow. A straight punch usually comes after a jab.

  1. Uppercut

An uppercut is useful for close distance situations. In short distance positions, an uppercut can be thrown in the center body without the opponent noticing it until it’s too late. It is also used as a strategy to kill the opponent’s stamina little by little.

  1. Hook

Hook is the hardest to execute among the four boxing punches. It is designed to swipe the opponent down from either left or right angle. If the center body is well guarded, the hook is best used to target from the side instead. It is delivered by bending the elbows 90 degrees and releasing the punch in a swivel manner.


Most Common Combination of Boxing Punches

More often than not, a good fighting strategy in boxing is founded with a couple of combined boxing punches. These combinations should be executed in a snappy and timely manner for best results. Knockouts are normally achieved when an opponent is not able to anticipate a coming punch. Check out the most common combos below.

  • Left jab combined with right straight
  • Left jab and right straight followed by another left jab
  • Left jab then right straight followed by left uppercut and end it with right straight to the face again.
  • Right straight, then left uppercut and end it with a right hook
  • Right straight combined with left hook
  • Jab to the body then right straight to the face and left uppercut to the chin

These combinations are very much effective for a knockout win when executed at the right timing. It is important that a boxer knows when the right time to execute such techniques during a fight is. Boxing punches are designed to blend with each other for a best knockout strategy.
